Urgent Action on the Ohio Budget.

This guide from How Things Work at the Statehouse is incredible. Please take time to review the individual issues with the budget and follow the guidelines and talking points to call your representatives.

Budget Basics

Every two years, Ohio passes an operating budget to fund (or not fund….) basically every major program in the state for the next two years. The next budget must be passed by midnight on June 30th, 2023. So the big fights are happening right now.

Basic budget process: Governor → Ohio House → Ohio Senate → "conference committee" to work out differences between the House & Senate(current phase) → Governor can veto individual lines from the massive bill → Process completed by June 30th (though they may extend the deadline to July 7th…TBD)

Budget Items to Call About

Here are some of the most controversial items in the current (Senate) version of Ohio's budget. Pick the item/s that matter most to you and make some calls! Tip: Call several times between now and June 30th. Pick 1-2 topics per call. This is much more effective than calling with a large list!) ITEMS SENATE REPUBLICANS REMOVED FROM THE BUDGET — Demand that these be put back in (click each item for more info):

• Medicaid coverage for pregnant women and children
• School meals for more Ohio kids
• Fair School Funding plan
• Children's Hunger Alliance funding
• Affordable housing
• Housing for pregnant women and babies
• Medicaid coverage for children up to age 4
• Minimum teacher salary increase
• Programs that support Ohio kids
• Medicaid coverage of doula services
• Access to school-based health services
• Protection against lead poisoning for children
• Food assistance for families
• Child care assistance
• Child care for critical occupations
• Safe discharges and transfers for long-term care facility (nursing home) residents
• Rape survivors' "right to know"
• Third Grade Retention Requirement

ITEMS SENATE REPUBLICANS ADDED TO THE BUDGET — Demand that these be removed (click each item for more info):

• SB 83 — Devastate public colleges/universities
• SB 1 — Take nearly all power away from Ohio's elected State Board of Education and the Ohio Department of Education and give it to the governor's office
• Ban remote jobs for state employees
• Massive private school voucher expansion
• Ending the Ohio Housing Finance Agency
• Cuts to local school districts and local governments
• SB 117 — Two new institutes at OSU and UT to mold far right attorneys
• SB 71 — The "DATA" Act ("developed by a think tank called a 'White House in waiting' for a 2nd Trump administration")
• Barriers to food assistance / SNAP
• Radical expansion of public records law exemptions
