Last week, a Jewish couple was walking down a Surfside street when they were confronted with antisemitic abuse and violence. According to police, Jorden Perozo punched the husband in the head and threatened to kill him.

Perozo was arrested and charged with battery with prejudice and harassing or intimidating someone based on religious or ethnic heritage. These charges recognize the hate-motivated nature of the alleged attack.

In response, our community came together at the site of the attack to send a clear message:

We will not hide. We will not be intimidated. We will not allow violence against Jews to be normalized.

No one should be assaulted because they are Jewish. No one should be targeted because of their religion or ethnicity. And no one should have to wonder whether being visibly Jewish makes them unsafe on an American street.

We are grateful to the Surfside Police Department for taking the attack seriously, conducting an investigation, and making a swift arrest.

We also thank Flanigan’s for taking action and terminating Perozo’s employment. Accountability matters, and we hope other employers will follow that example when employees engage in hate-motivated conduct.

An arrest is only the beginning.

We call on the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office to prosecute this case vigorously, pursue every applicable charge and hate-crime enhancement, and seek meaningful consequences if there is a conviction.

Hate crimes do not affect only the person who is attacked. They send a message to an entire community. When someone is punched or threatened because they are Jewish, every Jewish person hears that message: You are not safe here. Be afraid. Hide.

Our rally was our answer.

We are here. We are proud. We are visible. And we are standing together.

We will continue demanding accountability and meaningful consequences for hate-motivated violence. We will continue standing up for Jewish safety and dignity.

We will not surrender our streets to Jew-hatred.

Community members and civil rights activists gathered in Surfside, Florida, on Monday for a rally organized by the EndJewHatred movement to demand accountability following a physical attack on a visiting Jewish couple.

The rally was organized in response to an incident that occurred on August 16 at 95th Street and Harding Avenue in Surfside, according to local television stations citing a police arrest affidavit. A Jewish couple visiting from New York was approached by 35-year-old Jorden Stephen Perozo of Miami Beach while he was riding an electric scooter, with police and local reports stating that he began cursing at the couple and the Jewish community.

Jewish civil rights group calls for 'vigorous prosecution' of attacking Jewish couple in Surfside

"This was a targeted hate crime, and it must be met with vigorous prosecution to the full extent of the law,” said Brooke Goldstein, who founded #EndJewHatred group and the Lawfare Project.

“Zero tolerance for Jew-hatred must mean that every anti-Jewish incident is met with real consequences, without exception,” she said in a statement before Monday’s news conference.

Goldstein commended management at the Flanigan’s restaurant for firing Perozo.

“Flanigan's is to be commended for displaying moral clarity and conviction by firing the attacker immediately and demonstrating that hate has no place in their business,” Goldstein said. “That's exactly the standard every employer should meet when confronted with Jew-hatred, and it's why we're showing up to say thank you."

After a Miami Beach man was arrested for attacking a Jewish couple in Surfside, the community came together to thank Flanigan’s Surfside for swiftly firing the man, who worked at the location.

On Aug. 24, 10 days after the incident, #EndJewHatred held a rally at Surfside Town Hall to publicly recognize the restaurant and emphasize the importance of unity and solidarity against antisemitism. About 100 people attended the event, where speakers included Surfside Mayor Shlomo Danzinger, U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, and former Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer, among others.

A community is coming together to stand against a man whom his employer fired after he was accused of assaulting tourists in an antisemitic attack in Surfside.

An impassioned crowd carrying signs that read “No hate in Surfside” gathered outside of City Hall in Surfside Towers to condemn the actions of a man who was arrested this past Thursday for an antisemitic attack on a Jewish couple.

Members of the organization End Jew Hatred said it’s critical that Perozo face consequences when he has his day in court.

“It’s so important that the state attorney general, Katherine Fernandez Rundle, prosecute this man to the full extent of the law and that the hate crime charges are prosecuted because the most important thing are consequences,” said Brooke Goldstein with End Jew Hatred.

Flanigan's fires employee accused of antisemitic attack on Jewish couple visiting South Florida

A rally was held in Surfside to thank local police and Flanigan's restaurant after a man accused of attacking a Jewish couple was arrested and fired from his job.

The #EndJewHatred movement organized the event, calling Flanigan's decision to fire the suspect a model for other companies to follow.

The suspect, 35-year-old Jorden Perozo, is charged with battery and harassment based on religious or ethnic heritage. The incident involved a physical confrontation on the streets of Surfside.
