You are invited to a powerful and deeply meaningful event on Wednesday, April 29, in Toronto for #EndJewHatred Day.
The event will feature the contemporary opera Two Remain, which is based on the testimonies of Holocaust survivors. The production develops emerging Canadian artists and uses music, including a student matinee, to expand Holocaust education, foster empathy, and preserve the voices of survivors.
What is #EndJewHatred Day? It's a non-partisan day of pride, unity, action, and solidarity with the Jewish community. Since 2022, April 29 has been proclaimed as #EndJewHatred Day across several U.S. states and is increasingly being recognized here in Canada. The normalization of Jew-hatred is a dangerous and growing threat, fueled by extremism, and it is our collective responsibility to confront it.
Last year on April 29, it was deeply symbolic that we gathered at the Nova Exhibition, a sacred space preserving the memory of the victims of the Nova Music Festival massacre—an event that tragically reflected the resurgence of antisemitism and extremism in our time.
This year, we are proud to mark #EndJewHatred Day through the universal language of music. It feels especially important right now to focus on what unites Canadians—our shared humanity. Two Remain, presented by Jewish Voices In Music, is a powerful contemporary opera composed by Jake Heggie with a libretto by Gene Scheer. Built directly from the real testimonies of Holocaust survivors, the work draws upon the lived experiences of survivors of Auschwitz and Terezín. Through music and memory, this opera transforms history into immediate human experience, confronting themes of survival, moral courage, responsibility, and remembrance.
As antisemitic incidents reach historic highs in Canada and globally, the need to educate, remember, and stand united against hate is urgent. Jew-hatred is a growing threat to democratic values and social cohesion, weakening society when left unchallenged.
This production will feature emerging Canadian opera artists and include a student matinee to expand Holocaust education through the performing arts. By engaging both heart and mind, music fosters empathy, bridges differences, and ensures survivors' voices are never forgotten.
By gathering together for Two Remain, we affirm that remembrance is an active responsibility. We affirm that confronting antisemitism requires courage, unity, and moral clarity. And we affirm that in a moment when division is amplified, we choose to stand for dignity, humanity, and the shared Canadian values that bind us together.
We invite you to join us in marking #EndJewHatred Day—not only as a commemoration, but as a commitment to building a society where hatred has no home, and where memory inspires meaningful action. Proceeds will go towards supporting advocacy initiatives combating Jew-hatred —Two Remain serves as both an artistic presentation and a meaningful act of cultural responsibility.
