Today, I’m thinking about the Americans who gave their lives in service to this country and the families who carry that loss every single day.
Memorial Day is often associated with cookouts, long weekends, and the unofficial start of summer. But at its core, this day asks us to pause and remember the people who never made it home.
Across Iowa, there are families with an empty chair at the table because someone they loved chose to serve something bigger than themselves.
That sacrifice deserves more than a moment of recognition once a year. It deserves our respect, our gratitude, and a commitment to building a country worthy of what they gave for it.
To me, patriotism is not performative. It’s not about who can wave the biggest flag or shout the loudest. It’s about service. Responsibility. Community. Looking out for one another. Leaving things better than we found them.
Those values have always defined Iowa at its best.
So today, I hope you’ll join me in taking a moment to remember the men and women who gave their lives serving our country and honoring the families who continue to carry their memory forward.
Thank you,
Zach |
