A 322-yen snack is a strange place for a milestone, but that's where one landed this month. Someone at a Lawson, one of Japan's largest convenience store chains, scanned a barcode at the register and paid like anyone else in line that morning. The only unusual part showed up on the receipt next to the payment method: a yen-denominated stablecoin.

While stablecoins are building their reputation on big transfers between institutions, this test was smaller yet mightier: the first stablecoin payment to run straight through a Japanese POS system, using a HashPort wallet to settle JPYC on the Polygon Chain. Eleven days later, Lawson tried it again at a second store. The direction is clear. Stablecoins are working their way down from cross-border settlement to the average checkout line.
