Sharing devastating electoral news is never easy, especially when we all know what was at stake this year. We unfortunately must share that we came up short in electing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to the White House and we have lost several key Senate races, along with the Senate majority. We also want to note that there are a few outstanding Senate races that are still too close to call. The House still remains too close to call, and there were setbacks in the states. We did see a few important victories — Josh Stein will be the next Governor of North Carolina and the anti-environment supermajority in the North Carolina General Assembly has been broken. Elections come with great swings of emotion, no matter the result — that is the nature of them and why we all work so hard to elect climate champions at all levels of government. Once we digest this result and take care of ourselves, we must come back together and work even harder to elect a new majority of leaders who will put our planet, country, communities, and democracy ahead of special interests. These election results don't change the incredible way the GiveGreen community raised over a record breaking $58 million for climate champions all across the country. Thank you for being a part of this community. While the results are absolutely devastating, we do want to highlight a few incredible and historic victories from this election cycle to bring some hope for the future: - Angela Alsobrooks in Maryland, Lisa Blunt Rochester in Delaware, Andy Kim, and Elissa Slotkin in Michigan have won election and are headed to the Senate. Senator Tammy Baldwin has also won reelection in Wisconsin.
- Angela Alsobrooks will be the first Black Senator to represent Maryland, Lisa Blunt Rochester will be the first Black Senator to represent Delaware, and Andy Kim will be the first Asian American Senator to represent New Jersey.
- In the House, several champions made history: Julie Johnson will be one of Dallas County's first two openly gay elected officials and the first openly LGBTQ+ member of Congress from Texas, Sarah McBride (DE-AL) will be the first openly transgender member of Congress, Emily Randall (WA-06) will be the first LGBTQ+ member of Congress from Washington, and the first LGBTQ+ Latina in Congress, and Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) will be the first Indian American to represent Virginia.
- In the states, GiveGreen donors helped elect Josh Stein (NC) and Bob Ferguson (WA) as Governors so they can keep making progress at the state level.
When so much was at stake this November, this is obviously not the news we were hoping to share with you. We hope you are doing the best that you can in this situation and are taking care of yourself, family, and friends.
